BOSTON – Last week, Representative Jeffrey Sánchez sponsored his 7th Annual health-themed Back to School Jam celebrations in his district. The events took place on Monday, August 27 at Bromley-Heath in Jamaica Plain, Tuesday, August 28 at the High Street Veterans Housing in Brookline, and Thursday, August 30 in Mission Main in Mission Hill.
“I am proud to have held another successful year of Back to School Jam celebrations” Representative Sánchez said “it’s important to get the neighborhood children excited about school, learning, and staying healthy”.
Representatives from area health institutions were present to provide educational materials and free health screenings, such as vision, dental, and blood-pressure, to attendees. Among the institutions were Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, Massachusetts Dental Society, Boston University School of Dental Medicine, and the New England School of Optometry.
“The 2012 Back to School Jam at Mission Main was a success! Our residents were having a great time and we were pleased to see another great opportunity for community engagement especially with Mr. Jeffrey Sanchez & his team. It was awesome to also see so many local Boston organizations that were eager to assist in empowering our Mission Main families and children to live a quality of life,” explained Lynette Correa, Resident Services Coordinator for Mission Main Communities.
Sánchez gave out over ninety backpacks during the three events, as well as pencil cases, books, pens and pencils. Those in attendance also received free barbeque, fresh fruit and water. Members of Sánchez’ staff in collaboration with representatives from Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences and Northeastern provided face-painting and arts and crafts.
